For some reason, there seems to be some serious debate about whether or not a female’s nipple is acceptable. This issue, which I find to be completely absurd, is a legit concern for women who just want to do what they want with their bodies. Now, I call it absurd simply because of the fact that a woman’s body is just that: her body! There shouldn’t be any kind of rule which restricts  it. Every human deserves to treat their own body the way that he/she wishes. Unfortunately, we live in a patriarchal society where women are forced to face the consequences from laws that regulate their own body. In 2013, there were nearly 700 laws proposed which were dedicated to restricting a woman of her rights, specifically rights concerning her body. There aren’t even that many laws restricting firearm! Keep in mind that a majority of these people attempting to create these laws are male. There is no logic for the way a woman’s body is degraded the way it is.

One explanation behind such ridiculous limitations for what a female can and cannot do with her body is the sexist reasoning of double standards. They seem to be inevitable in this day and age and are defined as a “rule or principle that is unfairly applied in different ways to different people or groups.” Double standards among men and women are very insulting to each sex. However, women feel it much more harshly. Here are a few examples…

    • Men who have lots of sex are classified as “pimps” and women, “whores.”
    • Men who are assertive is a positive characteristic because it shows off his “executive leadership skills,” and women who do the same are just aggressive or bossy.
    • Throughout all of womanhood, females are pushed to have children, whereas men could go their whole lives without even being bothered about it.
    • A man’s nipple is normal, and a woman’s nipple is unacceptable.

Women live their whole lives being degraded and sexualized. We’re degraded in the sense that showing any characteristics aside from what we are assigned as females is deemed as wrongly stepping out of boundaries and results in negative connotation, such as being bitchy, masculine, or annoying. We’re sexualized by being objectified, slut-shamed, and held up to standards created by the media.  Women feel the wrath from nearly every perspective of their lives. These issues are damaging to not only the individual self, but society as a whole. When a female is disgraced for accepting her natural human form, what are we telling her? When a man can go topless whereas it’s illegal for a female to do the same, what are we telling him? When a female can’t breastfeed in public because it makes others uncomfortable, what are we telling women? When women are sexualized all throughout the media, what are we telling each other? When the equal rights amendment hasn’t even been passed, what are we telling the world? We need to open our eyes to the way females are treated due to their sex and reflect on what the real issue is. We live in a patriarchal society which restricts women from accepting their bodies, yet continues to sexualize them in the media. We need to speak up and fight back. We need to free the nipple.
